What Is Search Engine Marketing (SEM)?
People in my line of work seem to love there acronyms… BUT when you string a sentence of them together things can get a little confusing.
Search Engine Marketing:
“Search engine marketing, or SEM, is a form of Internet marketing that seeks to promote websites by increasing their visibility in search engine result pages (SERPs) through the use of paid placement, contextual advertising, and paid inclusion.[1]” – Wikipedia Definition
What does that mean exactly…?
Search engine marketing covers a number of forms of internet marketing where you pay to have a result in the search engines.
“What is an example of Search Engine Marketing?”
Google adwords is a form of search engine marketing called Pay Per Click Marketing (PPC).
If you own a womens shoe shop and requested a Google Adwords campaign, I would conduct:
- Online Market Research
- Current Competitor Analysis
- Keyword Research
- Industry Analysis
This would be used to develop a plan and a list of realistic keywords around your niche, products, colours and varieties to bid for traffic in the search engines.
From there I would create a google adwords account:
- Using targeted keywords
- Advertisements that represented the keywords and your offering (these ads point to relevant pages on your website).
Everytime someone types in a keyword you have bid on in your target marketing they will see your ad, if they click on your ad you pay a fee to receive that traffic (pay per click).
What happens after the Google Adwords setup is complete?
- Testing and measuring – we evaluate advertisments, bids and keywords and adjust the campaign for the best result.
- We provide monthly reporting on traffic and conversion rate to measure your success.
- We provide A six month review with ideas on how to improve your conversion rate (increase sales).
