What is search engine optimisation (SEO)?

People in my line of work seem to love there acronyms… BUT when you string a sentence of them together things can get a little confusing.

Search Engine Optimisation:

“Search engine optimization (SEO) is the process of improving the volume or quality of traffic to a web site from search engines via “natural” or un-paid (“organic”…search results as opposed to search engine marketing (SEM) which deals with paid inclusion. Typically, the earlier (or higher) a site appears in the search results list, the more visitors it will receive from the search engine.” Wikipedia Definition

What does this mean exactly…?

Search engine optimisation is the process of making your website code search engine friendly and associating your website with the keywords (that people are searching for) you would like to rank for and are relevant to your business.

What is an example of search engine optimisation:

If you own a merino sock shop and requested a search engine optimisation campaign I would conduct:
  • Online Market Research
  • Current Competitor Analysis
  • Keyword Research
  • Industry Analysis.
This would be used to develop a plan and a list of realistic keywords around your niche, other wool product, sock colours and varieties to optimise your website with an effort to increase the quality of your traffic.

“What Does the process of search engine optimisation involve?”

“As an Internet marketing strategy, SEO considers how search engines work and what people search for. Optimizing a website primarily involves editing its content and HTML and associated coding to both increase its relevance to specific keywords and to remove barriers to the indexing activities of search engines.” Wikipedia

What does this mean exactly…?

During the search engine optimisation of your website I take the keywords people are actually using and optimise your website with them in a way that search engines can read. Once your website is ready I then submit it to the search engines.
