The Ultimate Google Ads Glossary for Shopify Store Owners
Google Ads is full of acronyms: CPC, CTR, ROAS, Smart Campaigns, PMax… and you may find yourself asking “what does it all actually mean?” Our Google Ads glossary helps you decode these terms so you can navigate your campaigns with confidence.
If you’ve ever tried to DIY your Google Ads or manage an agency, you’ve probably run into acronyms that sound more like alphabet soup than a growth strategy. That confusion leads to wasted ad spend, unclear goals, and zero confidence when reading your reports.
In this glossary, I’m breaking down the key Google Ads terms every Shopify brand owner needs to know, so you can speak the language, spot red flags, and make smart decisions.
Google Ads Glossary: Essential Terms Shopify Brands Need to Know
General Google Ads Terms
Google Ads: The platform where you create ads that appear on Google Search, YouTube, Gmail, and across the web.
Campaign: A high-level container for your ads, audiences, budget, and settings. Every ad lives within a campaign.
Ad Group: A subset of a campaign that contains a group of ads and keywords targeting a shared theme or product.
Keywords: Search terms you want your ads to show up for on Google Search. The match type (exact, phrase, broad) controls how tightly Google sticks to that keyword.
Budget & Bidding
Daily Budget
The average amount you’re willing to spend per day on a campaign.
CPC (Cost Per Click)
How much you’re charged when someone clicks your ad. Lower is usually better—unless you’re getting higher-converting clicks!
CPA (Cost Per Acquisition)
How much you’re paying per conversion (sale, lead, etc). This is one of your most important KPIs.
ROAS (Return on Ad Spend)
Revenue generated / ad spend. A 5x ROAS means you made $5 for every $1 spent.
Smart Bidding
Automated bidding strategies that use Google’s AI to optimize for conversions or ROAS. Includes Target CPA, Target ROAS, Maximize Conversions, etc.
Search Campaign
Text ads shown in Google Search when someone types in relevant queries. High intent, great for bottom-of-funnel sales.
Performance Max (PMax)
A newer campaign type that runs across all of Google’s networks: Search, YouTube, Display, Gmail—driven by machine learning. Powerful but tricky to control.
Shopping Campaign
Product-based ads with an image and price that appear when someone searches for products on Google.
Display Campaign
Banner-style ads shown across millions of sites in Google’s Display Network. Often used for retargeting.
Key Metrics to Watch
CTR (Click-Through Rate)
Clicks divided by impressions. Higher CTR = more people are interested in your ad.
Impressions
The number of times your ad was shown. High impressions + low CTR = your ad needs work.
Quality Score
Google’s rating of your ad relevance and landing page experience. Impacts cost-per-click and ad placement.
Conversion Rate
The % of people who complete your desired action after clicking. Crucial for understanding whether your traffic is actually converting.
Why Knowing This Glossary Matters
If you’re going to manage your own ads (or even outsource them), understanding the language is essential. Without this knowledge, it’s easy to get snowed under by reports, waste budget, and say yes to strategies that make zero sense for your brand.
And here’s the truth: no amount of ad spend can fix a bad strategy.
Knowing these terms is the first step.
