You’re running Google Ads.
You’re getting clicks.
You’re even getting sales.

But here’s the thing…

Something still doesn’t feel right.

You’re not scaling profitably. Your ad spend is creeping up. And the more you try to understand what’s actually working, the more confusing it becomes.

Maybe you’ve tried learning Google Ads yourself and felt overwhelmed by the dashboards, the data, the weird acronyms.

Maybe you’ve handed it off to an agency or freelancer — but they send you monthly reports you don’t fully understand. You’re told “it’s working,” but you’re not seeing the growth in your bank account.

So you’re left wondering:
Are these Google Ads actually helping me grow… or just draining my budget?

Let’s break it down.

🧠 What Most Ecommerce Brands Get Wrong About Google Ads

If you’re a Shopify brand owner — especially if you’re scaling from $10k–$100k months — you’re probably being pulled in five directions at once.

You’re juggling product launches, supplier issues, TikTok reels, fulfilment… and now you’re expected to understand conversion attribution models too?

That’s unrealistic.
But you still need visibility into what’s actually driving revenue.

Here’s what we tell our clients:

“You don’t need to be a Google Ads expert. You just need to know what numbers to trust — and what they mean for your business.”

💡 The Numbers That Actually Matter

Forget CTRs, impression share, and all the fluff. If you’re a Shopify brand, these are the four metrics that truly matter.

1. ROAS (Return on Ad Spend)

This is your first checkpoint. If you spend $1,000 and make $3,000, that’s a 3x ROAS.

Sounds good — but only if your profit margin and repeat purchase rate support it.

If your product margin is 30% and you’re not getting second orders, that 3x might not be enough.

👉 ROAS tells you how efficient your ad spend is — not whether you’re making money. That’s where the next metric comes in…

2. Cost Per Sale (CPS)

This is your real bottom line.

Let’s say it costs $28 to make a $40 sale. That sounds okay — until you realise your cost of goods is $18, your packaging is $3, and your fulfilment is $4. That’s $25 in cost before ad spend.

Now your $28 CPS just killed your profit margin.

👉 Know your breakeven CPS — and track it religiously.

3. Conversion Rate (CVR)

How many people are clicking… and actually buying?

If your conversion rate is below 1%, you’re paying a premium for traffic that’s not converting. That often points to issues with your product pages, mobile experience, or overall messaging.

And with most ecommerce traffic being mobile, you only have seconds to earn trust.

👉 A conversion rate of 2%+ is generally healthy — but we’ve helped brands hit 5–8% by fixing their funnel.

4. Repeat Purchase Rate

This one is gold.

If customers come back and buy again — your first sale doesn’t have to be ultra-profitable. You can afford to break even and win long-term.

But if your store isn’t set up to capture emails, run remarketing, or build loyalty — you’re paying to acquire customers you’ll never hear from again.

👉 Google Ads shouldn’t carry your whole business. Email and retention strategies should turn first-time buyers into loyal customers.

🚨 Signs Something’s Broken

Not sure where to look? These are the red flags we see when Shopify brands come to us for help:

  • You’re getting clicks but no sales
  • Your Google Ads reporting doesn’t make sense
  • You’ve scaled your ad spend… but your profit is disappearing
  • You’re tracking random metrics like “Add to Cart” or “Page Views” as conversions
  • You’re not even sure what you’re spending each week

And maybe the worst one?

You’re stuck in Google Ads limbo — scared to spend more, scared to stop, and not sure what’s actually working.
