eCommerce Tip: Stalk your customers with Google Ads Remarketing

Here’s an eCommerce conversion rate optimisation tip: “Stalk your customers using remarketing”… in a non-creepy way, of course. If you’re not familiar with the Google Ads (formerly AdWords) lingo,
Google Ads Remarketing is the process of tagging a person’s browser with a cookie when they visit a certain page or take a specific action on your website—like adding a product to their cart and then leaving.

You can then show that person an ad related to the product they were looking at when they browse other websites across the internet.

Here’s an Example of Remarketing in Action:

Last week I was on theiconic.com looking for a new swimsuit for an upcoming holiday in Hawaii.

Now, whenever I log in to Gmail, Skype, or browse other websites, I see Iconic banner ads showing the exact pair of togs I looked at.
That’s remarketing in action—subtle, powerful, and effective.

Last week I was on theiconic.com website looking for a new swimsuit for a holiday I have coming up in Hawaii.

Now whenever I log in to Skype, Gmail or browse content websites on the internet I see Iconic banners featuring the exact pair of togs that I looked at on the site.

Why Would You Want to Do This?

  • Be a step ahead of your competitors

  • Keep your brand top of mind while potential customers research similar products

  • Recover abandoned carts and missed opportunities to convert

The reality is: people might not buy on their first visit. Maybe the phone rang. Maybe it wasn’t payday yet. Maybe they were still comparing options.
Without remarketing, you run the risk of being forgotten.

How Do You Set Up Google Ads Remarketing?

  1. Install a snippet of Google Ads tracking code (tag) on your website
  2. Create audience segments based on behaviors (e.g. viewed a product, added to cart, didn’t purchase)
  3. Build an ad (text or banner) that speaks directly to that audience
  4. Set up your Google Ads campaign to target those people
  5. Track your results and optimise

Your ad will then appear on websites that show Google Display ads—like Gmail, TradeMe, YouTube, and other content sites—reminding your potential customer about your product and increasing your chances of making the sale.

Pro Tip:

Before turning on any remarketing or traffic campaigns, Make sure your website is built for success  and to convert.  If your site isn’t optimised, you’re likely wasting your ad budget by sending traffic that won’t convert. You need to fix your funnel first, then turn up the traffic.  In order to get the best possible return on investment and create an eCommerce business you can scale you need to optimise your website, then turn up the traffic.
